See our Trial and Display Gardens
In the beginning there were bare paddocks…
In
1995 we made a commitment to developing an area especially for the
trial and display of bulbs and perennials in a garden setting so that
we could experience them as if in a garden rather than simply growing
in the paddocks.
The main aim of establishing the gardens was to learn about the
performance of perennials - both their individual "garden worthiness"
and how they combined with other plants. We then wanted to share
the lessons and experiences of this garden with our customers.
So we dug up a piece of the paddock and established the first stage
of the garden which consisted of 2 perennial borders - one in full
sun and one in part shade.
Delightful
and educational…
Looking back I don't think we could ever have imagined just how
instructive and enjoyable these gardens would become. We find them
invaluable for constantly teaching us about the "garden worthiness"
of plants as well as teaching us about how plants interact with
each other, their surroundings and how they cope with different
climatic conditions.
The gardens are also a wonderful place just to rest for lunch
or to find a little bit of inspiration when required.
Share
in our beautiful gardens….
Like all gardeners, we love sharing our gardens which means visitors
are always welcome. The best times to make personal visit include
from Spring until early December and then from February to early March
(which is when the gardens are at their peak for our annual Gardeners
Weekend). However, the gardens are still well worth visiting during
most of Spring, Summer & early Autumn.
Entry to our Trial and Display Garden is free except during special
events such as our Tesselaar Tulip
Festival and our Tesselaar Garden Living Expo.
The
gardens can also be seen throughout the catalogues since many of
the perennials are photographed in the garden. And now, thanks to
modern technology (and the help of Paul Tesselaar - our high-tech
family member) you can take this virtual tour of our gardens.
Dedication of the gardens…
In the year of our company's 60th anniversary (1999) we dedicated
the gardens to the memory of our late parents/grandparents since we
have so much to thank them for as both founders of this company and
as precious family members. Our father/grandfather taught us about
vision, passion and hard work whilst our mother/grandmother taught
us about compassion, love, gardening and angels (we think she was
one!).
