Spring - and life begins again in the garden!

There`s nothing that compares to the sheer magic of Spring, the gradual building of colour to an extraordinary intensity and the itch to dig into the garden now that the days are warming up and the rain showers growing fewer.

What gardeners should do in Spring:

ENJOY!

Spring is a wonderful time to delight in the fruits of our labour. Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of the Spring bulbs in full glorious bloom.

TAKES NOTES

Now that everything is in flower it`s a great time to think about what you might do differently next year. At this point it`s a great idea to take notes because by next Autumn when it`s planting time again it`s difficult to remember what all the good ideas were. Some people find taking photographs useful because they help remind you of the exact colours of the different bulbs and remember where the gaps in the flowering display were. Naturally, you`ll also need to mark the bulbs in the garden with plant labels so that you can find them when they`re dormant.

FEED YOUR BULBS

Don`t forget to feed your bulbs a couple of handfuls of fertiliser after the flowers fade. This is important if you want your bulbs to look beautiful next year since it`s over the next month or so that your bulbs are building up the store of food necessary for them to produce next year`s flowers.

VISIT OTHER GARDENS

Admiring your own garden is often a great joy but I`ve also discovered that admiring other people`s gardens can be just as much fun and a great source of ideas and inspiration. The Australian Open Garden Scheme book (available at bookshops & many newsagents) is the bible for this wonderful past time.

PLANT FOR AUTUMN COLOUR

Spring is a wonderful time for enjoying the garden and it`s also a great time to start planting a few bulbs and perennials to enjoy in future season: Bulbs to plant over the coming months include: Belladonna lilies; Sternbergia (the golden Autumn crocus), Nerines, the Autumn flowering snowflake (Leucojum autumnale). It`s also time to plant some perennials to ensure you`ve got colour in the garden in late Summer and early Autumn. Perennials to plant now include: Sedums, Geraniums, Hellebores, Euphorbias, Asters and Daylilies.
