Gooseberries

Description: Large juicy berries which ripen from green to purple if left on the bush.
Fruiting season: Summer.
Planting time: Plant the canes on arrival and leave them undisturbed for years. This allows the bush to mature.
Preferred position: Open sunny spot.
Soil: Well drained, rich soil.
Depth and spacing: Plant as deep as the crown and space about 1-1.5m apart.
Watering: Ensure the bushes get plenty of watering during Summer.
Fertiliser: Use a general fertiliser.
Pest or problems: Generally none.
Propagation: Prune in Winter. Removing the centre of the plant develops a more open structure to allow light in & for easier picking.
