Veld Lily

Botanical name:
Crinum powellii 'Alba'
Crinum powellii 'Rosea'
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Native to: South America
Flowering time: Feb- Apr
Height:70cm to 1m tall.
Planting time: Spring
Ideal aspect: Full sun to part shade. You will find these bulbs are
wonderful for the difficult-to-fill situations of dry shade.
Preferred climate: Cool to tropical.
Soil: Rich and well drained but generally tolerant.
Depth & spacing: Plant with the top of the bulb just above the soil surface
& 15-30cm apart.
Watering: Although this plant is very drought tolerant once established, it
performs best if the soil is kept moist once the foliage appears until the
time when the flowers have finished.
Preferred climates: This bulb will flower in all Australian climates &
easily tolerate light frosts. However, if you experience medium to heavy
frosts you should plant these bulbs so that they are sheltered by an
overhead canopy of trees. Alternatively, you could plant the bulbs in pots
which are then moved to a sheltered spot during frosty periods
Frost tolerance: This plant is sensitive to heavy frosts & so needs
protection (See comments above).
Fertiliser: General purpose fertiliser.
Comments: These bulbs are very easy to grow and prefer to be left
undisturbed for many years - in fact, sometimes they take a year to settle
in before they flower - but it's worth the wait!
