Erythronium revolutum

A dainty beauty for a shady spot. The decorative foliage grows low to the ground. The leaves are bright green with a deep purple mottling. The flowers stems are tall with up to four blooms on each. The flowers are a rosy pink and reach 4-7cm across. The flowers face downward though the petals recurve to show off more colour and their pendant stamen.

Galanthus Snow Drops

Snow Drops
Galanthus x caucasicus

Much loved bulbs with exquisite beauty. The bulbs are a cross of causicus, plicatus and elwesii plants. The foliage is grey-green and arches gently. The flowers consist of three pendant large petals that overlay three smaller petals that are each marked with a green spot. Grow in a cool spot in well drained soil. They grow well in conditions similar to those favoured by Hellebores.

Magic Lily

Magic Lily
Lycoris squamigera

Known as the Magic or Surprise Lily because it’s stems seemingly spring from nowhere towards the end of summer. The flowers are fast to bloom, taking 4-5 days from the stems emergence. The stems are strong, standing up to 70cm tall. Each stem carries 6-8 flowers which average 7-8cm long. The blooms have a sweet fragrance and last well. The foliage will surface the following spring. It is mid green, upright and lance like. It will fade as summer approaches. It is not unlike the foliage of an agapanthus. Interplant with a variety of bulbs, or use in clumps as part of a border or bed, they also grow well in pots.

Blue Squill

Blue Squill
Scilla natalensis

Another example of the beauty of bulbs. The tall flower stems support large plumes of soft blue flowers. Each plume is made up of around 100 star shaped flowers, each is around 1.5cm across and has a nice honey fragrance. The flower show will last around a month. The large bulb is planted so the neck is exposed. From the bulb basal foliage forms at the time of flowering. The foliage is broad, upright and lance like and grey green, usually with a purple lustre. The foliage is around 20cm with the flower and extends up to 60cm as the flower fades. Bulbs may take a season or so to settle in before flowering. Plant in rockeries, pots or beds or border in clumps or swathes. The bulbs grow during summer and will require water to flower at their best. They remain dormant in winter.
