Meadow Saffron

Meadow SaffronColchicum agrippinum

Stunning tessellated flowers for autumn.

Buy:

Cerise pink to purple checkered or tessellated patterning on vase shaped flowers that average 5cm long. The blooms form alone or in pairs from hardy corms. The short, upright stems grow up to 10cm tall and rarely flop which a common drawback for most of the species. They are also known as one of the Naked Ladies as the flowers bloom before the foliage. For this reason they should be planted into clumps so they don’t look lonely, or in combination with other foliage plants. They look fantastic in rockeries, lawn plantings, at the edge of borders or in pots. They naturalise well and will form nice clumps. The foliage is smaller than most Colchicums. It is lance shaped with a gentle wave, in deep green and emerges after the flowers, winter to spring. Plant in a sunny spot where the flowers can show off to best advantage. Plant into humus rich, well drained soil and keep moist whilst actively growing. It is known erroneously in some circles as Autumn Crocus but it is in fact more closely related to the Lily. Meadow Saffron as a term is also a bit misleading as while the stamen are a similar colour, all parts of the plants are poisonous if eaten. It’s origin in the wild unknown but they have been cultivated for many years. They are easy to grow in cool to temperate climates.

Slim Leaf Tulip

Slim Leaf TulipTulipa linifolia

Spectacular species Tulip.

Buy:

The scarlet petals shine in the sun. Their pointed ends open wide to expose a purple-black heart. Eventually recurving, the petals stretch to 8cm across. The blooms glow in the sun above glaucus foliage with a wavy edge. This species Tulip is endemic to the hot rocky slopes of Afghanistan and Central Asia. Their tough origins make them ideal for the Australian climate. They appreciate a hot dry summer in their dormancy and wake in the spring with the rain. They are more successful at naturalising than the hybridised Tulip forms. Plant in a sunny spot with good drainage. They are ideal in a rock garden, lawn or border planting. They can be planted in pots but we recommend placing them into the garden in subsequent years as a pot will limit their growth potential.

Christmas Lily 'White Dragon'

Christmas Lily 'White Dragon'Lilium longiflorum

We believe this is the best Christmas Lilium available.

Buy:

It produces large, open, highly fragrant blooms. They are suitable for potted plantings. This twice flowering version is doubly good. Plant these specially cold treated Lilium bulbs by the first week of March and you will have flowers in May and again in November-December. The flowers in these bulbs are ready to grow and bloom. Just give them a nice, sunny position and feed them well. After you have enjoyed the May flowers allow the foliage to die down naturally. The flowers will be back as good as ever in summer. Incredible value with ‘double the bang for your buck’! (Bulbs revert back to their normal flowering sequence in their second year).

Snakes Head Fritillaria 'Alba'

Snakes Head Fritillaria 'Alba'Fritillaria meleagris

A rare beauty.

Buy:

The large pendent, bell shaped heads have an exceptional and distinctive tessellated pattern. The pattern is white on white, like a shadow or ghost pattern. It is overlaid with fresh green striping in the centre of the petal. Each bloom is around 4.5cm long. The linear leaves are green with a grey sheen. They grow 6-13cm long. The flowers and foliage grow together. The bulbs grow best in moist, humus rich, well drained soil. They are endemic to England and prefer climates with cool winters and moist springs. They are lovely naturalised in the garden, as part of a lawn planting or rockery. They are delightful in pots. They can be planted in combination with other small spring bulbs such as mini Daffodils. They are hardier than most Fritillary species and as such can be left in the ground. Also known as the Checkered Lily for its tessellated pattern.
