Carex ‘Evergold’
Botanical name: Carex hachijoensis, Carex oshimensis `Evergold`.
Common names: ‘Everbite’, ‘Variegata’, ‘Aureo variegata’ and ‘Old Gold’.
History: Japanese gardeners who have always had a special love for plants with variegated foliage selected this ornamental cultivar long ago.
Origin:Japan. ‘Evergold’ is native to the Japanese main island of Honshu and the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu. It is common in dry woods and rocky hillsides at low altitude.
Name: Carex is the classical Latin name of the genus Carex.
Comments: It grows in a dense tussock that spread out slowly by short underground rhizomes. Rhizomes are horizontal, underground, modified stems with scale-like leaves. They develop roots and shoots at their nodes. Propagation of a grass should occur in Spring to increase the survival rate. Cut back the grass hard and then use a sharp spade to cut through the centre of the grass clump. Dig around the side of the clump that you wish to remove and then backfill the hole left with good soil.
Tips: One of the most beautiful Carex available today and an evergreen, the Carex makes an excellent show alongside water features. The weeping habit and elegant fine textured foliage of ‘Evergold’ lends itself to a formal border. Use it as an accent in masses, or in a hanging basket or pot where its lush variegated foliage can spill over the sides. ‘Evergold’ is a superb companion plant to hostas, and, like the hostas is somewhat tolerant of neglect. This plant is superb for potting whilst also making a fantastic ground cover. If massed and used as a ground cover very few weeds will venture through.
