Above the tall, dark green foliage come the most beautiful deep, violet blue flowers. They are in colour from the bud stage and the show lasts months through autumn. The flowers stand on lovely strong, upright stems which are structurally pleasing and add vertical interest. The blooms grow up to 10-20cm tall.
The upright stems are a deep green with decorative maroon patterning. The leaves grow spirally along the stem, each 20-30cm long.
Blue Ginger will prosper in either pots or in the garden, but it should be protected from frosts, so plant in a sheltered position or in a pot. You can even grow it indoors as a house plant. Once established it is easy to care for requiring little maintenance.
It is not actually a Ginger, but the stems resemble Ginger plants so that is where the common name comes from.
