The dainty, white flowers fall gracefully from the long, narrow stems. This elegant plant offers tremendous value in the garden. The white flowers mature with a whisper of pink. This heritage variety has stood the test of time and is loved the world over.
Dierama are valuable, evergreen perennials that will grow to form neat clumps of elegant, arching foliage. You can expect an impressive 3-4 month flowering period from these beauties. If you can bear to, the flowers last well in a vase and can add a touch of grace to your arrangements.
The flowers form on thin stems which create movement in the garden as they wave on even the gentlest breeze. Easy to care for, Dierama will multiply at a moderate rate once established. They don’t like their roots to be disturbed so plant them somewhere permanent.
Dierama flower best after they have had time to establish. So expect flower numbers to increase each year. Divide the clump every four or five years, as they become overcrowded and the flowering decreases, then you have even more to enjoy or share with fellow gardeners. A humus rich, well drained soil is ideal.
Keep Dierama relatively moist in flower and dryish over winter. They are mostly trouble free, though Aphids can cause minor damage.
Plant Dierama by ponds or in beds or borders. They are endemic to South African grassy hills and they look really good when grown in combination with other ornamental grasses.
Fairies Fishing Rods are known botanically as Dierama, other common names include Angel Fishing Rods, Fairy Wandflowers, Fairy Bells and Hair Bells.
