Epimedium ‘Mottled Madness’ has stunning foliage and plenty of airy flowers – up to a hundred tiny ‘fairies’ dance on each stem. The new spring leaves emerge with an incredible red marbling. This combination is dynamite. A rare offering, and one that should be snapped up. The mottling disappears as the weather warms, but makes a less dramatic reappearance in the cool of autumn.
The flowers have white sepals and little yellow petals. They flower longer than usual, lasting sometimes into late autumn. Epimedium ‘Mottled Madness’ is an introduction from the famed Darrel Probst.
Epimediums are fabulous, clump forming rhizomatous perennials native to woodland areas. They grow best in moist, humus rich, well drained soils and are best planted in a part shade to bright light position.

Epimediums are surprisingly easy to grow and terrific for planting beneath trees, in shaded borders, as shady ground covers, or in well cared for pots. They grow well with a whole range of plants such as Hostas, Hellebores, Polygonatum. You can also combine them with a range of spring flowering bulbs like Galanthus and Crocus. Try growing them beneath shrubs, Roses, Hydrangeas and more, they are so versatile.

Fertilise and mulch Epimediums in winter, they love the soil to be rich in composting leaves so don't hold back with dumping them on when they fall in autumn. You can divide your Epimedium clumps every 3-5 years and don't forget to protect new foliage from slugs and snails.

It is a good idea to cut back your Epimedium foliage late winter or spring, this will allow the new leaves and flowers to shine. Just as you would a Hellebore/Winter Rose. Epimediums are also known as Bishop's Hats and Horny Goat Weed.
