Rhubarb ‘Albert’s Red’ was selected and farmed locally. Farmer Albert has a discerning eye when it comes to plants, and while his crops are usually bulbs, his family loves Rhubarb, and so he purchased a number of plants from a neighbour. From this group of ten plants, he noticed one was outperforming all the rest. Over the years he was continually impressed by its production and so began building up the numbers. And now, we are lucky enough to share it with you.
Rhubarb ‘Albert’s Red’ has red stalks that grow all year. It is quick to establish, and while we don’t usually advocate cutting your Rhubarb in the first year, with this variety, the plant will still grow and establish just fine. It is the easiest, strongest rhubarb plant we have seen yet. In fact, when we lift the crowns, they usually go dormant to send them to you, but ‘Albert’s Red’ keeps on growing.
You can enjoy Rhubarb ‘Albert’s Red’ year round, even in cold climates it will crop through winter.
Rhubarb is both decorative and delicious. The red and green stems with lush foliage are equally at home in a vegetable bed or an ornamental border. Originating in NW China and surrounds, Rhubarb grows well in cool to temperate climates. Though when protected from the heat it has been successful in sub tropical zones.
Rhubarb prefers morning sun and requires a well drained soil. It is a good idea to protect your harvest from slugs and snails.
Once planted, it is best to resist temptation with Rhubarb and allow it to establish for the first year before you begin to harvest. When you do harvest, pull rather than cut the stems to prevent disease through damage to the remaining crown. Allow a few leaves to fully develop, this will keep the root system strong and ensure future crops.
Rhubarb is delicious stewed in desserts, jams, crumbles or tarts. It is high in Vitamins A and C.
