Heart stopping deep red-purple stems with matching flowers. Angelica gigas is an undeniably dramatic plant that is absolutely garden worthy. The tall stems and architecturally daring foliage are fantastic at the back or front of a border or bed. A rare find worth snapping up for an unforgettable late season show.

The mid green, deeply divided leaves grow up to 40cm long. The upright stems grow up to a metre. The dark flower heads grow up to 15cm across and are great for picking.

This handsome, plant produces lasting cut flowers. But if you leave them in birds and bees adore this plant too!

As with all Angelicas, it is biennial, so will flower every second year, then die, leaving seed to sow, or naturalise for future plants. The new plants will have a head turning foliage show in the first year and flowers in the second. Removing the flower heads before they set seed will help the plant stay perennial – this plant is particularly adapted to this.

Angelica grows in full sun to part shade, in a humus rich, moist soil. Water to establish and keep moist during active growth – it is endemic to Korea where it grows by streams and in moist meadows. The more sun it is in the more moisture it requires.

Angelica has a long history and it was a prized medicinal herb in the middle ages. Legend said the Archangel Raphael bought it to earth from heaven, hence the name. It is still used in a range of herbal medicines today.
