Grown primarily for the foliage, this little beauty is a top choice for shaded gardens or pots. The fascinating flowers are a nice bonus, but are usually camouflaged beneath the leaves. The heart shaped leaves are green with a high gloss finish. When crushed, the leaves have a ginger smell.

Asarum grow well where Cyclamen, Winter Roses, Hostas and Dicentra grow.

The light green coloured blooms begin in early spring, while they are hidden beneath the leaves, if you grow them in pots you can lift them to eye level and enjoy. If they are grown in the garden, you can prune a little foliage to show them off. The flowers are more green than white and have long, trailing petals. The centre of the bloom is white with dark markings, they are pollinated by flies.

Grow White Panda Plant (Asarum caudatum) in humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Ideally, plant in semi shade to filtered light. It is a good idea to protect the leaves from slugs and snails. Dry shade isn’t a problem most of the year, but if it is a long hot summer a little water may be required. In pots it is best to keep them just moist.

The common name comes from the Rhizomes, which smell like ginger.
