This top-notch bedding or border plant boasts upright branches of spiralling, blue-green leaves. As the weather begins to cool, it comes into its own with brilliant, chartreuse bracts that last an age. As time passes, they deepen through copper and pink to red when the weather once again warms. At any time of year it holds its own.

The vibrant foliage stems are garden worthy, even without the blooms. If you are a fan of geometry their precise detail will provide endless fascination.

Beneficial insects such as bees also love the colourful bracts/blooms too.

A great choice to use in combination with spring flowering bulbs as, along with the visual delight, they will provide the practical benefits of shading them in the summer and helping to hide their fading foliage late spring.

Plant into a well drained, moderately fertile to humus rich soil. They revel in a dry, sunny spot and need at least four to six hours of sun to thrive. They tend to flop with too much shade and then they won’t wow you like they could. Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low, they become impressively dry tolerant and for us, even seem to colour better after a dry summer.

Allow them to self sow to share with friends or hoard them for yourself – you can never have just one!
