Plump, tear shaped foliage. Senecio are novel foliage plants that spill and thrill from the sides of pots or hanging baskets. The bejewelled tendrils creep along the soil, forming new roots as they grow – the more roots that take the more vigorous they are. They are graced with little white flowers that have a soft cinnamon perfume.

They favour Mediterranean conditions and, in ideal conditions they can grow up to half a metre a year (they never do this for me). Any excess can be struck for more plants. In their native, South African environment they creep along the ground, between rocks and under shrubbery, their rounded shape evolved to reduce water loss.

SIZE (HxW): 5-10cm x 20-70cm
I SEE THE LIGHT: Bright, indirect light is ideal. In high light the foliage will change. Keep out of the hot afternoon sun lest their leaves be sunburned or roots damaged. If it is too dark they won’t thrive.
TIME FOR A DRINK: They don’t need a lot of water. If they are in pots with good drainage and a well draining mix you should be fine whatever you do. Water well, then allow the soil to almost dry out before watering again, you are more likely to kill them with kindness than neglect! They do most of their growing spring/summer and this is when you should water most regularly. After a drier winter they tend to flower better. If they are too dry the foliage will begin to shrivel, this is a cry for help
I WILL SURVIVE: These plants are so easy, they pretty much look after themselves. In pots ensure you choose a cactus/succulent potting mix for best results as it offers the sharp drainage they need. Choose a pot with drainage holes to ensure they don’t end up sitting in water. You can form new plants through root cuttings (about 10cm) mist the surface to encourage root growth – this is how you can encourage more stems to form in your own pot from the plant too (without actually removing the stem, just draping it across the soil). Their roots are small and don’t run very deep so you can use a shallow container with no problems. Ideally a terracotta or clay container will offer more protection than a plastic pot.
Use a diluted, liquid fertiliser in spring to keep them happy and healthy. They aren’t heavy feeders so will forgive you if you forget. They don’t like the cold, so in cold climates, indoors keep them away from draughty windows and outdoors they should be protected by an eave.
