Clematis 'Starlet

With all new breeding out of Japan, this Montana Clematis has a lot going for it. The dusty pink flowers open in profusion and are followed by handsome seed heads. It is a more compact Montana and the leaves turn coppery red in autumn, this colouring is best in cool climates. Each bloom is 4-7cm across.
The flowers of Clematis montana ‘Starlet’ open from around October and last well. They creep then leap; the first year or two will be impressive but by the second or third they will be in full flight.
Clematis Montana are fast and furious, flower for an age and are easy to grow and care for. They grow large and are usually fragrant. They boast strong disease resistance and are Pruning Group One, so no regular maintenance is required, you only need trim them if they get too big or leggy after flowering. Clematis montana are commonly known as the Mountain Clematis as they hail from the mountains of China and the Himalayas up to a 4000 metres. The are deciduous, becoming losing their leaves in winter.

The old adage is to plant your clematis so their 'head' is in the sun and their 'feet' are in the shade. In other words they like their root zone to be cool and protected, and the stem to grow up into a sunny position. You can protect the root zone with mulch and/or by using other plants to shield the roots from the sun.
Grow Clematis in humus rich, moist, well drained soil. They need good drainage or the roots can rot. Plant so they will receive around six hour’s sun a day and shield from the hot afternoon rays. To perform at their best they should be fertilised well. Use a Rose Fertiliser every three months or so.
