Vertical interest in spades! Liatris boasts upright spires of fine foliage, topped with tall stems of colour. Just a few of these perennials can make a big impact in the landscape.
The blooms open late summer and keep on until frost. Beneficial insects and birds will flock to these beauties.
The blooms open from top to bottom over many weeks. It is this unusual pattern that earned them their common name Blazing Star as they resemble comets.
Liatris ‘Blazing Star’ is a marvel as part of a mixed bed or border. It is very at home in cottage gardens, amongst ornamental grasses or meadow plantings too. When cut, the flowers last well and look wonderful in arrangements.
Plant Liatris in a sunny position with moderately fertile to humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Water to establish, it becomes dry tolerant once it has settled in.
Liatris are commonly known as Dense Blazing Stars or Gayfeather. It is endemic to the prairies of North America.
