A celebration of colour with large foliage rosettes in green, cream and rich red. A gem in pots or gardens.
Depending on their lighting and conditions the coloured striping includes cream, gorgeous green, rich reds and almost black. The best colour is achieved in summer dormancy, bright light and with a bit of water stress – good news for all those of us who forget to water. Beautiful at any time of year, in winter the greens and creams can become more prominent, with the red to burgundy and almost black. Colour also affected by light, see below. Puts out good offsets. Suitable as a houseplant.
SIZE (HxW): 20-40cm x 10-35cm
I SEE THE LIGHT: Bright, indirect light is ideal. In high light the foliage colour will change. Keep out of the hot afternoon sun lest their leaves be sunburned or roots damaged. You will get the best foliage colour in bright light. They may stretch if they don’t have enough light.
I NEED A DRINK: Low, water well, then allow the soil to almost dry out before watering again. Keeping them on the drier side will result in better colour. If they are bone dry the leaves will wither and shrink – this is a cry of help. They are dormant through summer so at this time, ideally, protect them from the hot sun and reduce watering.
I WILL SURVIVE: These plants are so easy, they pretty much look after themselves. In pots ensure you choose a cactus/succulent potting mix for best results as it offers the sharp drainage they need. Choose a pot with drainage holes to ensure they don’t end up sitting in water. Offsets will form at the base of the plant, they can be left to continue the generations, or removed and repotted or shared or whatever you like. They will stretch, but it is nowhere near as fast as the ‘normal’ Aeonium.
Use a diluted, liquid fertiliser in autumn to keep them happy and healthy. They aren’t heavy feeders so will forgive you if you forget. Aeoniums are monocarpic, so they can flower, but after they do this they will die. Not to worry it can take years and years for them to flower and they will produce offsets for the next generation along the way. Or you can simply remove the flowers.
