Ligularia 'Midnight Lady'

Botanical Name: Ligularia dentata
Family: Asteraceae/Compositae
Plant Type: Evergreen perennial
Size (HxW): 70-100 x 50-70cm
Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot with the roots spread below the soil. Space 50-70cm apart.
Soil: Moderately fertile to humus rich soil, they are not too fussy.
Aspect: Part shade or morning sun. Best sheltered from the hot afternoon sun. In cool climates they can take full sun but you will need to water.
Climate: Cool to Temperate
Frost: Hardy
Water: Water in well and keep moist in active growth. If they get hot or dry the foliage will wilt, but it is very forgiving and with cool nighttime temperatures or some additional water they will perk right up. The better the supply of water, the more quickly they will establish and look their best.
Fertiliser: A light application of a well balanced fertiliser in spring or summer.
Flowering Time: Summer to autumn.
After Flower Care: Remove spent flowers and foliage to tidy. You can cut it back at the end of the growing season to allow the new growth to shine.
Notes: Protect the foliage from slugs and snails who find it delicious. Divide in spring with the new growth as required – three to four years. Suitable for pots but will require attention to watering or you will have wilted looking plants. The dark leaf colour is at its best spring and summer.
