This impressive, towering plant shines at the back of beds and borders, forming dense clumps of upright foliage that is topped with masses of flowers for months on end. A strong growing perennial with deep red stems and lush, emerald green foliage.
Eupatorium ‘Gateway’ flowers from summer to autumn with abundant lilac pink flower heads. These flat topped panicles are around 20cm across and the bees and butterflies love them.
Use Eupatorium ‘Gateway’ at the back of beds and borders, in cottage gardens, meadow planting, by ponds or even the picking patch.
It is commonly used in the USA and Europe both in gardens and in the cut flower trade – so you know it will last well in a vase. You can even leave the flower heads on over winter, where they continue to remain ornamental, turning to shades of bronze and of course they are also enjoyed by the birds. Then simply cut back early spring to allow the new foliage to shine.
Plant Eupatorium ‘Gateway’ into humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Grows well in clay soils. Suitable for full sun to part shade positions. Water to establish, this takes around four to six weeks of regular watering, then keep moist in active growth.
It has won the prestigious Great Plants Award from the Nebraska Landscape and Nursery association.
