Spring to summer the delightfully double, ruby red flowers are held above the foliage on red stems. The new foliage has a lovely red blush before it matures to blue-green.
Aquilegia ‘Ruby Port’ is an heirloom variety that is first noted in the 1600’s. Its longevity is testament to its beauty and ease of care.
Aquilegia ‘Ruby Port’ is often be seen at the illustrious Chelsea Flower Show. It is much loved by landscape designers as it combines well with grasses, cottage plants and more, adding a touch of drama wherever it grows.
Aquilegias are a cottage garden essential with sweet, nodding flowers and delightful lacy foliage.
Aquilegias thrive in light to moderate shade though; with sufficient moisture they will tolerate full sun. The flowers do tend to last longer when planted in light shade. Aquilegia will do best when planted in humus rich, well drained soil.
This short lived perennial will set seed for future generations. Once the seed has fallen/been collected cut the plant back and you will get a fresh mound of foliage for the summertime.
The botanical name, Aquilegia stems from the Latin word for Eagle, as the spurs resemble Eagles claws.
