Stiff stems of the bluest foliage stand proud and tall. Their columnar growth is great for adding a bit of informal structure to your beds. As the cool weather of autumn creeps in the leaves gradually change to a delicious caramel hue.
The feathery flowers open above the leaves and last for many months, turning from blue to gold.
Panicum 'Blue Steel' is lovely planted in swathes, as a part of cottage borders, along fence lines or even in xeriscapes. Panicum grasses are easy to grow and care for. They will tough out poor soils and don't mind the dry once they have established.
Panicums don't need to be divided as regularly as Miscanthus grasses - they are one of those plants that simply get better with age. You can cut them back late autumn/early winter or leave the bronze foliage to stand for winter interest and cut back in late winter, before the new spring foliage shoots.
Panicum virgatum are commonly known as Switch Grass or Switchgrass.
