This lush grass turns a glorious golden hue in autumn. The narrow stems create not just a sensational show of colour, but also add beautiful movement to garden schemes. Very ornamental and versatile to a range of garden designs.
The feathery awns open above the leaves and last for months, standing tall even when the weather cools, creating winter interest.
Panicum ‘Autumn Glory’ is lovely planted in swathes, as a part of cottage borders, along fence lines, in containers, or even in xeriscapes. Panicum grasses are easy to grow and care for. They will tough out poor soils and don’t mind the dry once they have established. They are useful in combination with spring flowering bulbs as they come into their own as the spring bulbs are fading.
Panicums don’t need to be divided as regularly as Miscanthus grasses – they are one of those plants that get better with age. You can cut them back late autumn/early winter or leave the bronze foliage to stand for winter interest and cut back in late winter, before the new spring foliage shoots.
Panicum virgatum are commonly known as Switch Grass.
