Colourful, polka dot foliage, what’s not to love? The green and cream/white mingle on the leaves with an air of sophistication.
Hypoestes establish quickly and will be full size before you know it. They are a great plant choice to add contrast to your range of greens and will liven up a windowsill with ease.
As well as being known as the Polkadot plant, Hypoestes are also commonly known as Freckle Face, Baby’s Tears and Flamingo Plant.
Size: 15-40cm x 15-30cm. Best to be pruned to 30cm or less.
I see the light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. You should be able to read during the day in their position in the room, without turning on a light. You will get the best colour in a brightly lit position, if it is too dull you will lose the pretty polka dots.
Water needs: Water regularly, topping them up as the soil begins to dry out. They will cope with a fair amount of neglect, and you will know you have forgotten about them as they droop and sulk, but will quickly pep up when you apologise and add a good dose of water. More water needed spring/summer and winter requires less care.
They appreciate some humidity – especially in homes with ducted heating/air conditioning. It isn’t as vital as for many houseplants, so you might get away without it – you will know if it is lacking as the leaf tips will turn brown. You can provide some humidity for your beloved plant, by placing them over a plate with rocks and water, this will naturally form humidity around the plant. Or if you want to get very fancy and grow a few of these tropical treats, purchasing a humidifier is a good investment – they are also good for you. Or you could grow it in a bathroom which naturally gets a good dose of steam. Or grow with other plants where the humidity will naturally form around the plants. They are also smashing in terrariums.
I will survive: Their ideal temperature is 14-30C. They can become a bit leggy after a year or two, you can simply cut them back and they will reshoot from the base. You can propagate from the cuttings and enjoy some all new plant/s. A single dose of diluted, liquid fertiliser annually in spring/summer is all you need to keep them happy and healthy.
