A fantastic choice for vertical interest. Masses of white flower heads on slender stems over fine foliage. Beneficial bees and insects love the flowers almost as much as gardeners.
The handsome, fine foliage of Sanguisorba canadensis is soft green with a blue blush and opens low on the stem. The leaves, when crushed smell of cucumber and can be used in salads (not recommended in pregnancy). The leaves change to copper in autumn.
Useful and easy in borders or beds or at the garden’s edge. When combined with tall grasses, it is stunning and is the perfect match for plants with yellow tinged foliage.
The flowers are suitable for arrangements and last well.
Grow Sanguisorba in full sun to light shade in moderately fertile, to humus rich, well drained soil – it is quite obliging and adaptable and can even cope in heavy soils. Water to establish (this takes around four weeks to settle in and get access to the surrounding soil) and keep moist in active growth. It is a good idea to protect new growth from slugs and snails. Winter dormant.
Sanguisorba is commonly known as Burnet or Canadian Burnet.
