From early spring, glowing chartreuse flower heads form en masse and last an age. They make a sensational focal point and are sure to win a place in your heart and garden for all time.
The vibrant foliage stems are worth it even without the blooms, their upright form creates beautiful structure in the landscape. The blue-green foliage is a real stand out. New shoots are constantly developing from the crown.
Beneficial insects such as bees also love the colourful bracts/blooms. It is rarely affected by pests and disease and is a cinch to grow and care for.
Plant into a well drained, moderately fertile to humus rich soil. They revel in a dry, sunny spot and need at least four to six hours of sun to thrive. They tend to flop with too much shade and they won’t wow you like they could. Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low, they become impressively dry tolerant and for us, even seem to colour better after a dry summer. They don’t like humidity. Remove just the spent flowers at the base to tidy as required is really all you need to do to keep this plant running to perfection. Be mindful of the sap on your skin and wash with soap, we recommend gloves when pruning.
Allow them to self sow to share with friends or hoard them for yourself – you can never have just one! They are the perfect match for Echiums.
