Fabulous, long flowering compact, evergreen plants that can take hot, dry conditions. This plant does all the heavy lifting, leaving you able to sit back and enjoy the show. The sunshine yellow flowers open freely on these well branched plants and last well. The textured, grey green leaves grow to around 2.5cm. It is even compact enough for a container.
Phlomis lanata ‘Pygmy’ is commonly known as Woolly Jerusalem Sage or Dwarf Jerusalem Sage.
The flowers open in whorls, progressively up the stem. The blooms show off for quite a time, from spring to autumn. With the blooms intermittently opening along the stems there is a great, massed effect of colour and bloom from these plants. The stems can even be left standing over winter for an even longer lasting show.
The leaves are soft and luxuriant, shaded green and silver with a slightly softer reverse. This silver sheen works beautifully with blues and purples in the garden, or any colour really. You can use the foliage to enhance or form backdrops to great effect.
Phlomis is perfect for beds and borders. They are at home in dry gardens and stunning in cottage gardens.
Plant Phlomis in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. Water in well, they then become wonderfully dry tolerant once established.
Phlomis is native to the rocky slopes of Turkey and Syria, so you know it can tough out dry heat.
