Throughout summer spires of gold, pink, peach and red rise up in glorious fashion and endure into autumn. A sterile form with a rosette of deep green leaves. An asset for gardens or pots with colour you could stare at for hours and it is an easy one to work in with a variety of planting schemes. Flowers open from around January to April.
Digitalis ‘Goldcrest’ is a novel cross of D. obscura which hails from the Mediterranean and it is where the plant gets its nice, compact foliage, unusual colouring and sun tolerance with D. grandiflora from the East of Europe which is where the large flowers and frost tolerance are obtained.
This showy plant is a striking addition to any garden and adds a nice element of vertical colour. The foliage grows in a thick rosette, below the blooms. Foxgloves, or digitalis look best grouped toward the middle or back of a bed, where the tall blossoms will brighten any spot. It is a vigorous, long blooming plant.
Foxglove blooms start to open at the bottom of the stalks and gradually move upward providing weeks of fantastic colour.
Plant Foxgloves into well drained soil, water in and keep moist in active growth. This short lived perennial, that will last two or three sensational seasons, even more.
Our tip – if you are keen to cut the flowers and want to get the best longevity, cut them in the morning, when the florets are one third to half open.
The individual flowers are about the size and shape of a thimble. Fairies are said to have sewn gloves for foxes from their petals.
Digitalis ‘Goldcrest’ is also known as Digitalis ‘Waldigone’. It is commonly referred to as Sunset Foxglove or Willow-leaved Foxglove.
