A rare ornamental of great esteem and lofty heights.
The finely divided, shiny, glaucus foliage forms handsome mounds, from which epic flower umbels of golden blooms emerge and tower.
While it is commonly known as a giant Fennel, because of its similar leaves, it doesn’t hold the same flavour as its namesake and is deemed inedible. It is still a herb but it is in a different genus.
A water wise, drought avoider, Ferula tingitana is dormant through summer, emerging in autumn with the seasonal rain.
Plant Ferula tingitana in moderately fertile to humus rich, moist, well drained soil in a sunny position. Endemic to grassland and dry mountainous, coastal slopes of the Mediterranean. Remove flowers to encourage more lush foliage. May die after flowering, but will produce more than enough seed for future generations. Frost hardy.
It has a large tap root, so resents disturbance so divide only as required.
