An award winning, long blooming and lush beauty. From midsummer to autumn (around four months or more), the handsome foliage is topped with masses of deep red flower spires that open from deeper, almost black buds.
The elongated arrow or heart shaped leaves are mid green and blush yellow as the weather cools. It is quick to establish and sure to be a fast favourite.
Persicaria ‘Blackfield’ looks fabulous as a filler, in rock gardens, along the garden edges or in containers. It is vigorous and hardy without taking over. It can cope with a range of garden soils (including clay) and conditions and is long lived. It holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, so you know it not only looks good but won’t take up much of your time to do so. It has made a big international impact so it is wonderful to have it arrive here in Australia.
Persicaria ‘Blackfield’ flower heads can even be left stand into winter. Beneficial insects and birds adore these blooms. The flowers and foliage are suitable for picking too.
Plant in moderately fertile to humus rich soil. Ideal in a full sun to part shade position. Water to establish then only if rainfall is low. Dry tolerant once it settles in but versatile enough to thrive in a bog garden or by a pond. Cut back spent foliage early spring or winter to make way for the fresh growth. Divide spring/autumn as required.
Syn. Bistorta amplexicaulis, common names include Knotweed, Mountain Fleece, Fleece Flower and Bistort.
