Handsome Hosta
New in 2025.
In stock (low stock)

A delightful dwarf Hosta with crowded clumps of mid green foliage and dainty stems of lilac flowers.
Each leaf grows to just 5cm and they cluster together en masse, gradually forming tidy clumps as they establish. Summer to autumn, 30cm stems of bell shaped, lilac flowers open on narrow stems.
Hosta is for Austrian botanist, Nicholas Thomas Host (1761-1834). Venusta is from the Latin, meaning handsome or charming, certainly very apt. The leaves grow to around 10cm, it stands out as the smallest of all the Hostas.
In gardens or pots, Hostas are easy, shade loving herbaceous perennials. Their glorious, lush foliage is absolutely adorable and their flowers are a decorative and often fragrant bonus. Easy care perennials that return reliably each season.
Plant Hostas in a bright filtered light, morning sun or part shade position, where they are sheltered from the hot afternoon sun. Humus rich, moist, well drained soil is ideal. It is always a good idea to protect their foliage from slugs and snails who find it unfortunately delicious.
Hostas are a great ground cover for shady spots. They also grow well in pots, where they have the advantage of being transportable – so you can bring them to the fore just as they hit their foliage crescendo, then hide the pots behind the shed as they begin to fade - but don't forget to water!
