Japanese Forest Grass 'Sunflare'
New in 2025.
In stock

This trophy grass has cascading, chartreuse foliage, becoming gold. The eye catching mahogany highlights increase as the plant matures. In autumn, burnt orange, green and burgundy shades are added to the mix.
A woodland plant (the clue in the common name, Forest Grass), you will achieve the best golden colour with a morning sun or bright filtered light position – avoid hot afternoon sun or it can scorch. A fantastic garden plant and equally good in containers. Try them in rockeries, edges, mass plantings, woodland gardens or pots.
The soft green and red flowers open on narrow stems above the plant in summer but are insignificant compared to the beauty of the foliage. These leaves are similar in texture to bamboo.
Plant Hakonechloa ‘Sunflare’ in a morning sun position with moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. The clump will increase gradually through underground rhizomes. Water well to establish, it takes plants four to six weeks for their roots to penetrate and gain access to the moisture and nutrients of the surrounding soil. They appreciate consistent moisture during active growth. Prune back late winter/early spring to allow the new foliage to shine.
Hakonechloa macra is common.ly known as Japanese Forest Grass, Forest Grass or Hakone Grass. ‘Sunflare’ is a sport of ‘All Gold’.
