Erythronium 'Rose Beauty'
Up to four graceful, rose pink flowers open on each slender stem. Each pendent, recurved bloom is 3-5cm across with a heart of gold.
The low growing, decorative foliage emerges early spring and boasts bright green leaves with deep purple patterns. The leaves are oval shaped and grow 10-15cm long.
As woodland plants, Erythronium love a cool garden spot with moist, well drained soil – think Hostas. They require some shade so plant under deciduous trees or in a shaded rock garden where they can happily naturalise and gradually form colonies. Water in, and keep moist during active growth, they don’t like to dry out, even in dormancy.
The botanical name, Erythronium is from the Greek; erythros meaning red for the foliage or some of the species blooms. The bulbs look a little like a dog’s tooth hence the common name Dog’s Tooth Violet. Another common name is Trout Lily because the foliage is reminiscent of the fishes shape and pattern. They also go by Fawn Lily and Adder’s Tongue.
