Japanese Anemone 'Pink Saucer'
Japanese Anemone ‘Pink Saucer’ is early flowering, opening as early as January, but more regularly February, depending on conditions. The flowers continue for many weeks, even months, we have enjoyed them as late as April. Each pretty bloom is around 6cm across.
For ease of care, impact and versatility this is one of our favourite plants. They will grow well on just 4 hours of sun a day, but can cope with more if watered. They are a good choice for adding height to a border and don’t need a lot of fuss.
The longer Japanese Anemones have to establish, the more flowers you will be able to enjoy. You can pick them for vases to enjoy. Even after the flowers have faded, the seed heads remain decorative and can be left standing to extend the show.
The flowers open on narrowly branched stems over lush, mid green foliage. Japanese Anemones will grow to form a healthy clump and the seed can be left to sow or collected. Any unwanted extras are easily removed and shared, this is best done in spring.
Plant Japanese Anemones in moist, humus rich, well drained soil. They grow best in morning sun or part shade though, with a bit of extra water will succeed in sun. Rabbits and deer aren’t interested in these plants which is a boon in the hills. Water to establish then only if rainfall is low, they are dry tolerant once established.
For us in the Dandenong Ranges, the foliage is pretty well evergreen; we give them a cut back in late winter or early spring when they become untidy and the foliage turns a bit black and have they refresh quite quickly.
