Star of Bethlehem Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum)
A garden 'star' with massive flowering potential. 6-20 glowing, silver white flowers can open on each stem, now that’s blooming marvellous! What’s more, without any fuss from you, these low maintenance bulbs will come back year after year of their own accord.
Ornithogalum ‘Star of Bethlehem’ grows well in pots and of course in the garden. Try planting them at the base of deciduous trees, in borders or rockeries.
The foliage is long and strappy, while it can be a bit lazy, arching and lolling about on the ground but you won’t notice it with all the starry blooms in your eyes.
Plant in full sun to part shade in a well drained soil. Plant 10cm deep and 5-10cm apart. Water in to establish and then only if rainfall is low during growth, they become dry tolerant as they mature.
Ornithogalum ‘Star of Bethlehem’ goes by many other names, these include, Summer Snowflake, Starflower, Sleepydick, Grass Lily, Birds Milk, and Pyrenees Star of Bethlehem.
A good bulb for naturalising and in the right conditions they will gradually form nice clumps.
