- Ranunculaceae
- Plant Type
- Deciduous rhizomatous perennial
- Size (HxW)
- 20-30cm x 20-30cm
- Depth & Spacing
- Plant potted plants at the same level as in the pot. Space 15-20cm apart.
- Soil
- Moist, humus rich, well drained soil. Add leaf mould or compost to lighter soils.
- Aspect
- Part shade to dappled shade. A woodland plant that wants protection from the hot afternoon sun.
- Climate
- Cool to temperate
- Frost
- Hardy
- Water
- Water to establish, then keep evenly moist through spring while in growth and flower. Water less once the foliage dies down, but don’t let the soil bake dry over summer.
- Fertiliser
- A light topdressing of compost or leaf mould in late winter is usually all it needs. They aren’t heavy feeders.
- Flowering Time
- Spring
- After Flower Care
- Leave the foliage to die down naturally as it feeds the rhizomes for next year. Tidy away the dead leaves once they have yellowed.
- Notes
- The plant goes dormant from early summer, so mark its position to avoid digging into it. In the right conditions it spreads slowly by rhizomes to form a soft carpet under deciduous trees and shrubs. Dig and divide when dormant if clumps become crowded. All parts are toxic if eaten.
