BOTANICAL NAME: Buddleja delayvii
PLANT TYPE: Deciduous perennial
SIZE (HxW): 50-60cm x 40-60cm. ‘Summer Bird’: 30-50cm x 40-100cm. Won’t grow as big in pots.
DEPTH & SPACING: Plant at same level as in pot with the roots spread evenly below the soil surface. Space 50-60cm apart.
SOIL: Moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. They don’t like wet feet and tend to rot in poorly drained soils.
ASPECT: Full sun to part shade.
CLIMATE: Cool to Mediterranean
FROST: Hardy, but should be protected while young. If you live in a frost affected area it is best to hold off planting until the threat of frost has passed.
WATER: Water to establish then only if rainfall is low. Dry tolerant once established.
FERTILISER: Apply liquid fertiliser spring and summer to encourage the best flowers. Or a one off application of slow release fertiliser in spring.
FLOWERING TIME: Summer to autumn.
AFTER FLOWER CARE: Remove spent flowers to tidy and encourage more blooms.
NOTES: A great option for pots or small garden spots. Flowers good for picking. Prune back hard early spring to make way for new, bushy growth.
