Short lived herbaceous perennial, often grown as an annual or biennial
Size (HxW)
30-60cm x 20-30cm
Depth & Spacing
Plant at the same level as in the pot with the roots spread evenly below the soil. Space 25-30cm apart.
Soil
Well drained, moderately fertile soil, neutral to slightly alkaline.
Aspect
Full sun, with afternoon shade in hotter areas.
Climate
Cool to Mediterranean. Struggles in humid subtropical summers.
Frost
Hardy
Water
Water to establish, then keep evenly moist through flowering. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause crown rot.
Fertiliser
A balanced slow release fertiliser in spring, with a potash rich liquid feed once buds form.
Flowering Time
Late spring to summer
After Flower Care
Cut spent flower stems back to the base after the first flush to encourage a second flush in late summer to autumn. Cut to ground level once the foliage dies down in winter.
Notes
A compact delphinium that rarely needs staking. Protect new shoots from snails and slugs. Plants are short lived, so allow a few to self seed or resow to keep them in the garden. An excellent cut flower. All parts are toxic if eaten.
