Evening Primrose 'Twilight'

Botanical Name: Oenothera speciosa

Plant Type: Semi Evergreen
Size (HxW): 30cm x 50-100cm
Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same level as in the pot with the roots spread evenly below the soil. Space 50-100cm apart, closer for a more immediate effect.
Soil: Average to humus rich, well drained soil. Very tolerant of rocky, sandy soils. In pots use a good quality potting mix.
Aspect: Full sun to semi shade. It won’t flower if there is too much shade.
Climate: Cool to Mediterranean
Frost: Hardy
Water: Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low. They are endemic to S.W. USA and Mexico so are used to hot, dry conditions. However in bone dry conditions, the flowers will be smaller in size or the plant may go dormant. If growing in pots, ensure they are kept moist, especially during the flowering season. It is important that they don’t get waterlogged in winter dormancy.
Fertiliser: Add a general purpose fertiliser in spring, they aren’t heavy feeders.
Flowering Time: Summer to autumn
After Flower Care: Prune in winter to allow the new season foliage to shine.
Notes: It is a good idea to protect the plants from slugs and snails. If mildew becomes a problem, remove the affected foliage and destroy. In extreme cases use a fungicide, home made or store bought. Allow seed to fall for future generations, and the pods are ornamental.
