- Plant at the same level as in the pot with the roots spread evenly below the soil surface. Space 20-40cm apart, closer for a more immediate effect. Ensure you don’t bury the crown as it will likely rot.

- Humus rich, moist, well drained soil is ideal. Dig through some rotted compost or leaf matter if you really want to spoil them.

- Filtered light or morning sun is ideal. In too much sun the leaves scorch, darker colours take more sunlight. In too much shade they won’t bloom.

- Water to establish, it will take around four weeks for the roots to penetrate the surrounding soil and they should be regularly watered until then. Once established they are quite dry tolerant. They tend to rot in boggy soils.

- They aren’t heavy feeders, a top dressing of leaf mould/compost or a light sprinkling of a well blood and bone in spring is plenty. Fertilisers high in nitrogen may encourage weak growth that is subject to rot. If below deciduous trees nature should take care of this for you!

- Remove spent flowers and foliage to tidy. An annual pruning of all the old leaves early spring will allow the new foliage to shine. Check for any old wood as you go and cut it right back.
- Notes
- Divide every three or four years in spring as required – they tend to look a little lack luster at this time and division will refresh them nicely. If you are growing yours in a container, bigger is better as the potting media takes longer to dry out, so will need less care. You will still need to remember to water, especially over summer, where on hot days you may need to care for them daily.
