Family
Crassulaceae, Cactaceae
Plant Type
Evergreen
Size (HxW)
Various
Depth & Spacing
Place cuttings onto the soil surface. Space 5-30cm apart depending on effect. Plant potted specimens at the same level as in the pot, don’t put in too large a pot too soon or they will struggle, increase pot size gradually.
Soil
Well drained, soil. In pots, use a cactus and succulent mix.
Aspect
Bright, filtered light. They are suitable for growing indoors in bright light. Kalanchoe get the best foliage colour in high light. Avoid hot afternoon sun as it is likely to burn the foliage. They appreciate good ventilation.
Climate
Cool to Sub Tropical
Frost
Tender
Water
Water minimally, allowing soil to dry out between watering – a dryer soil tends to result in a more intense colour. You are more likely to kill them with kindness, they rot if left to sit in water.
Fertiliser
Use a diluted, weak liquid fertiliser in late winter. Avoid over fertilising these plants as this can produce weak and lanky growth.
Flowering Time
Various. Tiger’s Jaw (Faucaria) need good light in summer in order to flower. Aeoniums are monocarpic, so they can flower, but after they do this they will die. Not to worry it can take years and years for them to flower and they will produce offsets for the next generation along the way. Monkey Tail: The flowers are a bright, salmon red and can grow up to 5cm across. They open along the stems in the warmer months of spring and sum. Each blooms lasts for three or more days. You tend to get the best flowers when they have had a bit of cool winter weather.
After Flower Care
None required.
Notes
They look great in decorative pots grouped together with other varieties. If you are growing Cactus/Succulents in pots, put them in morning sun or part shad because, in a full sun spot with hot afternoon rays, their roots and fleshy leaves will become damaged from too much heat (in the ground they are better protected). Indoors, place your pot by a sunny window. They would rather be pot bound, so repot gradually and only every few years. ‘Ihi’: To encourage more stems pinch the new growth spring/summer.
