Manchurian Lilac

Botanical Name: Syringa wolfii
Family: Oleaceae
Plant Type: Deciduous shrub
Size (HxW): 2-3mx 2-3m
Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same level as in the pot with the crown at soil surface. Plant 2-3m apart.
Soil: Moderately fertile to humus rich, with slight acidity is best for growth.
Aspect: Full sun to semi shade. They need 6 hours of sun a day to flower well.
Climate: Cool to Temperate
Frost: Hardy
Water: Water to establish then only if rainfall is low, they do not like wet feet, especially in winter. They will develop a deep root system and will become dry tolerant as they establish.
Fertiliser: A fertiliser high in phosphorous is good to promote root growth during the plants development. Add at planting time or soon after. Once established, a well balanced liquid fertiliser annually after blooming will be adequate.
Flowering Time: Spring to summer
After Flower Care: Prune only after flowering. Remove older branches or deadwood to leave room for new growth.
Notes: Leaves yellow before falling in autumn. Dormant through winter. Mulch annually with well rotted cow or sheep manure in late winter and a handful of blood and bone. We have heard it recommended a covering of mushroom compost will sweeten the soil and keep the plant healthy too.
