- Plant 3-5cm beneath the soil surface and 5-10cm apart. They are delicate so towards the front of the garden bed or in a rockery is ideal. They look their best when grouped together.
- Soil
- Well drained is the most important element - if the drainage is poor they tend to rot. You can improve soil conditions prior to planting by adding compost and well rotted animal manure.
- Aspect
- Full sun to semi shade. They won’t flower in heavy shade - you need at least four hours of sun a day, six ideally.
- Climate
- Cool to Mediterranean. They flower best with warm days and cool nights. Frost: Sensitive. Light frosts aren’t a problem but if they are prolonged they will be negatively affected.
- Water
- Water to establish and keep moist in active growth (winter to early spring). Keep relatively dry in summer dormancy, if they sit in water they tend to rot.
- Fertiliser
- Apply a well balanced fertiliser each winter and spring for best blooms.
- Flowering Time
- Late winter to spring. We have found the times to vary depending on weather conditions. You will often not see the narrow leaves emerge, so if your winter is dry, water anyway so they don’t miss out on a drink at this vital time. If they don’t flower this is likely the reason.
- After Flower Care
- Each flower lasts around three days, but there is a succession of them which will bloom for a few weeks.
- Notes
- Moraea clumps well and can be divided every few years to increase stock. As required the subterranean stolons can be dug and divided in autumn, replant as soon as possible, or store in a dry, airy spot to replant the following autumn. Suitable for containers, but don’t forget potting mix is perfectly drained so you need to water regularly during growth.
