Viola

Botanical Name
Viola hybrids: 'Ruffled Dark Heart', 'Purple White Rim', 'Ruffled Wine', 'Ruffled Yellow'. Violas Collection = one of each.
Family
Violaceae
Plant Type
Compact flowering perennial (grown as cool-season bedding)
Size (HxW)
All varieties: approx. 15—20cm x 20—30cm
Depth
Plant at pot depth
Spacing
Spacing 15—20cm apart for a full, carpet-like display.
Soil
Fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture. Enrich with compost, particularly in containers and hanging baskets.
Aspect
Full sun to part shade
Climate
Cool to Mediterranean
Frost
Half hardy — protect from hard frost, especially in containers.
Water
Water regularly — relatively high water needs, especially in containers and hanging baskets, which dry out faster.
Fertiliser
Feed regularly through the flowering season with a balanced, water-soluble or slow-release fertiliser.
Flowering Time
Autumn through spring
After Flower Care
Deadhead regularly — the key to keeping Violas blooming for months. Trim back lightly if plants become leggy mid-season. In warmer climates, treat as a cool-season display and refresh plantings each autumn.
Notes
'Ruffled Dark Heart' (purple, dark centre, soft yellow edge), 'Purple White Rim' (rich purple, crisp white edge), 'Ruffled Wine' (deep velvety wine-red) and 'Ruffled Yellow' (radiant yellow, dark centre) offer year-round colour and soft fragrance. Note: the Violas Collection is periodically sold as a reduced 3-variety pack (VIWCL2) when one variety is temporarily out of stock — check current availability before ordering. Watch for slugs/snails, powdery mildew/botrytis in humid conditions, and aphids.
