A stand out choice for late season colour. One of the first to bloom, the bright florets mass on the rigid stems from summer well into autumn. The golden, double blooms dazzle on the well branched stems. The petals have the occasional red splash which adds to the autumnal colour appeal.
The seed heads of Helenium ‘Wyndley’ will remain standing through winter creating interest. It is lovely and compact and easy to grow.
Keep the soil moist for best flowers and plant in a sunny position. The soil needs to be well drained, moderately fertile to humus rich are suitable. Remove spent flower heads at the start of the bloom season to encourage even more. The flowers will grow larger in areas where the nights are cool.
Helenium look best when planted in groups or swathes. Good companions include Crocosmia, Dahlias such as 'Bishop of Llandaff', golden Helenium or Echinacea. Plant them in groups and the colony will increase year after year. Helenium ‘Wyndley’ is also compact enough for potting.
Common names for Helenium are False Sunflower, Helen’s Flower or Sneezeweed (the dried leave were used in snuff).
