Easy to please with plenty of blooms. Zygocactus are long lived and unbelievably easy to care for plants in pots and hanging baskets. Grow them on the patio, under trees or even indoors. Zygocactus or Schlumbergera are jungle cactus with abundant, brightly coloured flowers to around 8cm long. The flowers are quite erect and open at the ends of the arching leaf stems. The leaves are connected in flat segments, 4-6cm long. These have been selectively bred in Victoria for larger blooms and more compact stems.
Ideal flowering conditions are bright, filtered light with short days and long, cool nights (11-13 hours of darkness, including bright artificial light). They enjoy some humidity so adore our tropical and sub tropical climes. In the southern states and inland Australia they can make terrific house plants.
My mother in law had one in a pot that flowered what seemed like constantly and she swore she did nothing but water it once a month if that.
Water to establish, then allow the soil to become dry on top before watering again. Ensure you plant in a good quality, well drained cactus/succulent potting mix. A light application of water soluble fertiliser early spring and late summer is helpful for blooms. Allow pot to become overcrowded before potting on.
Zygocactus or Schlumbergera is an epiphytic cactus native to Brazil where they grow on rock crevices and tree boughs and are pollinated by humming birds. They have been in cultivation since the early 1800’s. Zygocactus are also known as Crab Cactus or Crab Claw Cactus for the cladophylls or claw like sections on the flat stems.
