Botanical: Schlumbergera truncata
Plant Type: Evergreen perennial
Size (HxW): 30-40cm x 30-40cm
Depth & Spacing: Place cutting on the soil surface, space 10-40cm apart, closer for a more immediate effect.
Soil: Ensure you plant in a good quality, well drained cactus and succulent potting mix. Adding a little peat moss for acidity is beneficial. They are naturally epiphytic so good drainage is vital. They usually grow in amongst rocks or tree branches.
Aspect: Bright light is ideal, with protection from the hot afternoon sun, such as under a patio or even indoors. The leaves will turn yellow if they are getting too much sun. If you really want to spoil them, pop them outside in a shady spot for summer and bring them indoors when flowering in autumn and winter for a bit of colour.
Climate: Cool to Tropical
Frost: Keep protected from severe frosts.
Water: Water well, then allow the soil to become dry on top before watering again. Ideally water the potting mix rather than the plant. You are more likely to kill them with kindness than neglect they don’t like wet feet and tend to rot. If the base of the plant rots it will no longer have access to nutrients and the plant will die.
Fertiliser: Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser spring/summer, or a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Flowering Time: Autumn to winter. Ideal flowering conditions are bright, filtered light with short days and long, cool nights (11-13 hours of darkness, including bright artificial light). Buds may drop if it doesn’t get the darkness needed, the temperatures are too high or the soil too dry.
After Flower Care: Remove any spent flowers or foliage to tidy.
Notes: Plant in a hanging basket or pots for a dramatic display. Allow pot to become overcrowded before potting on. Flower colour can be affected by temperature, if it gets very cold before the buds open the colouring is likely to be different. As the temperatures change so too with the subsequent flowers.
