These bulbs on offer require patience and will take around two years to flower. A Hippeastrum papilio bulb need to be 8-9cm across to be of flowering size.
An exotic species Hippeastrum hailing from Brazil. Flowers bloom for up to eight weeks on tall, straight stems above fleshy basal foliage.
The soft, green petals are overlaid with contrasting maroon striations.
If you choose to grow yours in pots, once in flower, they can be bought indoors to display. The flowering time varies depending on climate.
In warmer climates Hippeastrum papilio will remain evergreen. Keep moist (but not soggy – use a well drained soil/potting mix) and fertilise regularly from early spring to summer for best blooms. They should be relatively dry over dormancy autumn/winter.
In pots they love to be overcrowded, so don’t put yours in a large pot, and it is better to allow them to be pot bound before potting on.
‘Papilio’ is French for Butterfly, a good description of this flowers form, just like a swallowtail.
