Aquilegia Oriental Columbine
The handsome combination of sulphur yellow and wine red create wonderfully sultry blooms. The flowers open freely from around November to January and are a real standout in the landscape and great for cutting. A unique beauty worth snapping up.
Oriental Columbine is a magnificent Columbine or Aquilegia species from Japan and Eastern Asia, where it grows in open woodlands. The foliage forms a verdant mound of lacy leaves through spring and summer.
Oriental Columbines grow well in full sun to light shade. It will flower better with protection from hot afternoon sun. Water to establish and keep moist in active growth.
Oriental Columbines look best in massed plantings or in large containers. After the initial flowering has finished, it is a good idea to cut the stems back to the basal foliage and fertilise for future blooms. Leave the last flowers of the season to form seed heads to increase your stock.
The botanical name, Aquilegia stems from the Latin word for Eagle, as the spurs of the flowers resemble Eagles talons.
Aquilegias are commonly known as Columbines or Granny's Bonnets. Aquilegia oxysepala is endemic to China, Japan, Manchuria and Eastern Siberia.
