Artemisia 'Powis Castle'

The aromatic, fern like foliage creates a lovely, soft cloud effect in the garden and acts as the perfect background, filler and accent plant in both a cottage or a formal garden setting. The silver colouring contrasts and compliments with the run of the mill greens and stuns in combination with ebony leaves.

Also known as Wormwood, or Mugwort, Artemisia is a fabulous foliage plant. ‘Powis Castle’ holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. American horticulturalist and author, Allan M Armitage has said ‘Powis Castle’ is “one of the finest plants in cultivation” which is one heck of a recommendation.

In summer the leaves are peppered with panicles of yellow flowers. The foliage should definitely take centre stage so feel free to remove these as they can detract. The leaves are rabbit and deer resistant (rabbits dislike Artemisia plants).

Plant in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. The roots tend to rot in soggy soils so ensure they aren’t left to sit, especially in winter.

Prune lightly in spring or summer to keep bush tidy and vigorous. A semi evergreen sub shrub that dies back through winter in very cold climates. Should not be cut back to the wood.
